{"id":889,"date":"2010-12-03T20:13:22","date_gmt":"2010-12-04T01:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/benhauck.com\/offthemap\/?p=889"},"modified":"2010-12-03T20:13:22","modified_gmt":"2010-12-04T01:13:22","slug":"on-sane-interactions-or-sanity-not-in-the-individual-sense-but-in-the-social-sense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benhauck.com\/offthemap\/2010\/12\/03\/on-sane-interactions-or-sanity-not-in-the-individual-sense-but-in-the-social-sense\/","title":{"rendered":"On Sane Interactions, or Sanity: Not in the Individual Sense, but in the Social Sense &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but when I think about sanity, especially as promoted within general semantics, I tend to think about it in the individual sense.<\/p>\n<p>That is, I think about sanity as a personal thing.\u00a0 That general semantics is for <em>you<\/em>, in order for <em>you<\/em> to get sane.<\/p>\n<p>But last night while lying in bed before sleeping, it struck me that general semantics didn&#8217;t actually seem to be about something so individual and personal.\u00a0 Sanity, I was thinking, was a bit more social as\u00a0 treated in general semantics.\u00a0 Specifically, I was thinking about <em>sane interactions<\/em>.\u00a0 What they might be.\u00a0 What they look like.\u00a0 And how general semantics seems to be talking more about <em>those<\/em> than just personal sanity &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>I think the notion of sane interactions evolved a bit from thinking about life as a negotiation, which I&#8217;d been thinking about <a href=\"http:\/\/benhauck.com\/offthemap\/2010\/11\/30\/a-brief-note-for-now-on-negotiation\/\" target=\"_self\">recently<\/a>.\u00a0 Or, perhaps separately I was thinking about how some interactions I have can be just plain <em>insane<\/em>,\u00a0and thinking about insane interactions just got me thinking about sane interactions.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember the train of thought.\u00a0 But I remember that the idea of sane intereactions was really interesting.<\/p>\n<p>War, from a korzybskian perspective, probably fits the bill as an insane interaction.\u00a0 Coordinating schedules with friends and family is probably a bit more on the sane interaction plane.\u00a0 That is, it probably is sane interaction insofar as you, your friends,\u00a0and family aren&#8217;t trying to sabotage plans at the same time.\u00a0 Does that mean that sanity is a quality of interaction wherein the participants don&#8217;t sabotage each other&#8217;s pursuits toward particular goals?\u00a0 And insanity is a quality of interaction wherein the participants do sabotage their goals?<\/p>\n<p>If so, that would mean that many sports are probably insane interactions.\u00a0 Well, at least on the surface.\u00a0 Digging a little deeper, competition is intentional in many sports, so if you <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> compete, and instead <em>cooperate<\/em> with the opposing team, you&#8217;ve probably created an insane interaction.\u00a0 But let&#8217;s say that at your job, you require cooperation, so any competition you are unnecessarily faced with may make it seem that you are in an insane interaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>As far as what general semantics is talking about when it talks of sanity, it is talking to you.\u00a0 But maybe it&#8217;s talking to you <em>and<\/em> that other person you&#8217;re interacting with.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s looking at time-binding (the passing on of constructive information from generation to generation, a term coined by Alfred Korzybski) not as done by individuals but as done in interactions.\u00a0 That is, if God were in a helicopter, maybe he&#8217;s not looking at you, but instead looking at the interaction you and that other person happen to be in.\u00a0 And his advice is not to make you better, but to make <em>your interaction<\/em> better.\u00a0 Hm?<\/p>\n<p>Probably more later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but when I think about sanity, especially as promoted within general semantics, I tend to think about it in the individual sense.
