{"id":880,"date":"2010-11-30T06:36:47","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T11:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/benhauck.com\/offthemap\/?p=880"},"modified":"2010-11-30T06:36:47","modified_gmt":"2010-11-30T11:36:47","slug":"a-brief-note-for-now-on-negotiation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benhauck.com\/offthemap\/2010\/11\/30\/a-brief-note-for-now-on-negotiation\/","title":{"rendered":"A Brief Note (for Now) on Negotiation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About the time I took to reading Thomas Schelling&#8217;s famous book, <em>The Strategy of Conflict<\/em>, I started to see life as a <em>negotiation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the book, Schelling sees conflicts as &#8220;essentially bargaining situations.&#8221;\u00a0 While I can&#8217;t remember my exact evolution of thought, it seems that somewhere around that sentence in the book I started to interpret &#8220;bargaining&#8221; as &#8220;negotiation,&#8221; and from there, conflicts as negotiations, and from there, nearly every interaction as a negotiation of some sort.<\/p>\n<p>Many people see negotiations as verbal exchanges.\u00a0 I say what I want, you say what you want, and we bicker and dicker to reach an agreement.\u00a0 However, (obviously?), not all negotiations are verbal.\u00a0 &#8220;Negotiation&#8221; has to do in general with any kind of manuveuring.\u00a0 You negotiate pedestrians on a busy New York City sidewalk.\u00a0 You negotiate cars and tractor trailers on the highway.\u00a0 You negotiate for age as you make health choices.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the archetypal games outlined in game theory&#8211;like Chicken, Prisoner&#8217;s Dilemma, and others not coming to mind at the moment&#8211;outline\u00a0<em>common negotiations<\/em>.\u00a0 I had forgotten that.\u00a0 I had struggled for a long time with forgetting that <em>bargaining meant (to me) negotiation<\/em>, and as a result, I forgot the meaning of &#8220;game&#8221; and the meaning of &#8220;bargaining&#8221; that I used in my teaching.\u00a0 &#8220;What&#8217;s a game?\u00a0 What&#8217;s bargaining?\u00a0 Well, it&#8217;s (essentially a) negotiation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m hoping I&#8217;ve arrived back at understanding.\u00a0 Stay tuned: I hope to write more on negotiation in the near future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About the time I took to reading Thomas Schelling&#8217;s famous book, The Strategy of Conflict, I started to see life as a negotiation.
