This morning I did the Percy Sutton 5K Run in Harlem. I finished in 20:03, meaning my average miles were 6:28s, a new record for me for this year.
At racetime, the temperature was 74, cloudy, and humid. Not the worst humidity I've endured, and actually less humid than I expected, but humid, as if you were running wearing a life jacket. I got out the gate within the first 11 seconds (it was a relatively small race), and I passed people for most of the race and maintained my place for the midsection of it, eventually passing people at the end.
I was very surprised to find I had run 6:28s. I thought I did well, but not THAT well! I invented a goal during the second mile of finishing under 20 minutes, and while I technically didn't make that goal, I came close, and also realized how hard I had to work to run 6:28s. In hindsight, I felt I was maybe even a bit slow, but that is probably from the humidity. Were the temperatures lower or the humidity less, I more than likely would have run even faster. The question is, Exactly how fast??
Today I had to run 20 miles for my marathon training, so I used this race as the beginning of my 20-miler. I then went to Central Park where I got in nearly 17 miles. The miles in Central Park were very, very slow, partly because of the weather but mostly because a race is a big effort and I didn't want to overtax my body on this already-overtaxing day. It counted more to me to do the miles than to do the miles in a fast time, considering the poor weather conditions. But I'm happy to say I got them done. Writing this later in the afternoon, the upper calf pain I was experiencing post-run is gone, and my heels feel a bit bruised from the pounding with a lighter shoe. But I have some energy and definitely some positivity. That's a good thing!
