★ News from January 2003:
I ran the Midnight Run in Central Park last night for New Year's, and completed the 4-miler in 31:10. That's about a 7:47 mile. I'm happy with that, even though I was lapped a lot; it's as if I'm learning how to run again post-surgery!

Today I auditioned for Louise Lovegrove for her New York Film Academy film.
No sooner than I post that I had an audition, I was just cast as Dancing Man in Louise Lovegrove's New York Film Academy film.
It shoots January 7-8, 2003.
Mistress Victoria (Holly Derito) and Boy-Toy (Ben Hauck)

Back in the summer of 2001, I was in the demo of the workout video Slavercise with my friend Holly Derito (aka "Mistress Victoria"). Holly has just put the finishing touches on the project, and the video and her S&M exercise class are getting heavy promotion.
Slavercise currently appears in the Living In Style section of Playboy.com. Click here to read her dominatrix-themed fitness column on Slavercise.
Visit my old archives and look for the 9/8/2001 entry for more information on the original shoot of Slavercise.

Today I will be working on the set of the television show Ed.
I was in this season's season premiere "Human Nature" (first aired, 9/25/2002) as a juror. I had some really good screentime.

Yesterday I worked on the set of the television show Ed. They were shooting scenes for two different episodes, and while I do not know the dates they are coming out or the episode titles, I think they will be out fairly soon.
The first scene they shot was between Julie Bowen's character and a new character to the show, Ed's assistant (I do not know her name). They sat at a counter and had a cup of coffee, mentioning how the coffee had elephant tranquilizers in it. At that point, I am in the background in a red buttondown shirt and jeans, getting a thing of sugar from the counter. I'm not sure if my going back to where I'm sitting is seen (I'm sitting at a booth, talking to a girl), but if I am seen, our conversation is fairly animated although pantomimed.
The next scene they had me in the same clothes, as it didn't matter for continuity because it's a different episode. We were in the show's bar called The Smiling Goat, and there were Valentine's Day decorations all around. When two plates of cheeseburgers are slid into the shot, the camera pulls back to reveal Ed and Ed's assistant talking. I am two down from the assistant with a mug of beer, talking to another actress named Hollis. Again, our conversation is fairly animated but pantomimed. The scene unfolds with a drunken man coming to over to the assistant and hitting on her, thus revealing she had just broken up with her boyfriend. My educated guess is that this episode will air before February 14th, possibly February 12th.

This came my way via email today. Its humor lies in its truth--what the Actor in it says is what I say as well as thousands of other actors say in NYC. It's a tough life--unfair and difficult--but you gotta love it!
(Please note that not all actors think just of themselves.)
ACTORS' EQUITY NEWS ADVICE COLUMN
Dear Actor,
I'm recently married. My wife's mother is calling constantly and
coming over without notice. How can I tell her to mind her own
business without hurting her feelings? My wife is her only child.
--Troubled in Tucson
Dear Troubled,
Rehearsal sucked last night. This guy who is playing my friend is
still on book and can't act for shit. The director choreographed a simple
little hand-to-hand combat scene and this guy couldn't for the fucking
life of him get it right. Of course he has one of the best agents in
town and has auditions today for TWO pilots. I, on the other hand, have 5
years of training and an MFA and can't get an agent to look twice at me.

All shows are directed by students in the MFA Directing program at The Actors Studio.

Busy day . . .
First, I had an audition at Granada Television for Laura Barnett of Laura Barnett Casting, for a video project called Vital Witness.
Then, I dropped off my headshot for Jack Young, Artistic Director of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, who was holding an audition I could not attend.
After that, I signed up with new casting office Artistic Endeavors, who were having a registration day for actors.
Later, I got a call from Joe at CBS Casting to arrange a general meeting for Friday, 1/24/2003.
Tonight, I open Michael Allen's one-act Wish in the show Nine by Nine!

I haven't been keeping up to date about the performances of Devil's Dancebelt, the improv group I taught long-form from scratch and now I coach.
The past two weekends this month, they performed at the "Lounge in Monsters Pajamas" show at Irish Rep, doing a improv form known as the Harold. On Sunday, 2/2/2003, they will be performing at the improv show "Holiday Inn Siberia" downstairs at the bar Siberia on West 40th St. They will be doing a new form they have been developing, a expansion of the Goon River improv exercises. I'm really excited about their upcoming show.
It's free, so make sure you check it out! Watch here for details.
Today I had a general for Amy Herzig and Andra Reeve, casting directors at CBS Casting. I met two CBS Casting interns from my alma mater Otterbein College--Ted Otting and Joe Dallaqua--who I learned helped land me the general.

What an eventful day!! My voicemail was going berzerk!!
Today, I auditioned for The Public Theater. In attendance was the casting director, Jordan Thaler.
Later this morning, I got a call to do commercial background work on Thursday, 1/30/2003. I will learn more information about the job on Wednesday. This job will likely interfere with my auditions for Nebraska Rep and the American Globe Theatre's presentation of playwright-friend Michael Bettencourt's plays on Thursday. I am trying to arrange new appointments.
After than phone call, I received a call from Angela at Grant Wilfley Casting to do a featured role on Law & Order: SVU as Paul Dumont, described as the episode's victim. I get to die in the episode, and they will make me up in blood. So in all likelihood, my bloody corpse will be the star of a television drama! I will learn more about the 2/3/2003 shoot on Thursday.
Finally, I got a call from Mel at Booked by Rita Powers to attend today's open call at their offices. Booked is a management office, and they submit actors for roles in all areas except theater. I had been on file with their office, but today I got to meet Sean Powers, Rita's husband, in person. Sean runs the extras casting division of Booked, known as "Extras Casting by Booked."
Tomorrow is the last performance of Michael Allen's Wish, and then hopefully some other projects are to follow soon after!

I got a callback for 1/31/2003 from the audition today for St. Michael's Playhouse. I was called back for the roles of Jaston in the play Greater Tuna.

Today I worked background on a commercial for Maybelline. The product was Clear Smooth, and the title of the commercial is "Discovery." It was a lot like the last Maybelline commercial I worked, where they had two young models looking pretty and upscale people walking in the background, recycled a few times. The last one I worked on, I saw the commercial once and Sarah Michelle Gellar was the spokesperson for it, unbeknownst to any of us.
For this shoot, I wore khaki pants, brown shoes, a white shirt, and a beige sweater draped over my shoulders. I simply got in and out of a taxi parked at the curb, while the camera filmed the two models inside. It was a short day, which was nice.
Afterwards, I journeyed to the overbooked Nebraska Rep audition going on, and left a note of audition availability for the casting people and my headshot and résumé. Since I wasn't able to get in this morning for the open call because of the commercial, I'm hoping to get an appointment for tomorrow.
Tomorrow, I already have 4 auditions lined up ... the St. Michael's Playhouse callback for Greater Tuna, an audition for Target Margin Theater, an audition for the Michael Bettencourt short-plays festival (called Shrapnel) at the American Globe Theatre, and an appointment with a group called The Actors Dispatch. Why not go for a 5th with Nebraska Rep?!
My Law & Order: SVU shoot date was moved from 2/3/2003 to this Saturday, 2/1/2003.

Then, I had an audition for Target Margin Theatre. In attendance were Casting Director Greig Sargeant and Artistic Director David Herskowits.
Later in the afternoon, I auditioned for the Michael Bettencourt shorts festival called Shrapnel. It's being done at the American Globe Theatre. In attendance were Executive Director Liz Keefe and Director/Producing Artistic Director John Basil.
Afterwards, I met with Robert of Actors Dispatch, an ad hoc/per diem management company.
